Frequently Asked Questions

How is the game played?
  • Look at a website about lawn bowling.
  • Look at videos about lawn bowling.
  • Read a folksy and charming introduction to the game of lawn bowling and to our club.

I have always thought of lawn bowling as a game for old people. Is that the case?
  • No. People of all ages can bowl. Lawn bowling is a game that is played by youngsters and by seniors and a participant can get a surprising amount of exercise during a game. You will get your exercise by the walking back and forth as the ends are played, by the bending, stretching and the thrust required to deliver 3 or 4 bowls each end, and by the bending to gather the bowls.
  • We have casual games that our new bowlers feel quite comfortable in playing. We have games where the competition is definitely present.
  • The game is easy to learn but challenging to master and once someone who is not a senior tries the game, it becomes obvious that there are challenges a-plenty. That is why it is not just a game for seniors. However, the beauty of the game is that seniors can take advantage of their finely-honed skills and still bowl competitively. It is a game of touch and strategy and for that, you are never too old or too young.

I have never bowled before. Can I try a game at L.L.B.C. to see if I like it?
  • We offer “no obligation to join”, learn-to-bowl sessions that you may attend at your convenience.
  • We supply the equipment.
  • To arrange a lesson use this form to contact us.

Can I borrow some lawn bowls to learn the game and then continue to use them for a while?
  • Yes. We have many sets of bowls available at the Club for you to use for your first game and even your first year of bowling.
  • You can even rent those bowls for your second season of bowling.

Do lawn bowlers need to wear white?
  • No. For all of our general "Club" bowling and for many tournaments at L.L.B.C., we dress casually in colours of our choice.
  • For some "fun days" we have suggested colour-themed wear.
  • For some outside tournaments, “whites” or club colours are required.

Do I need to wear special shoes?
  • Just something reasonably smooth and flat-soled such as sandals or running shoes or walking shoes.

Will I eventually need to buy my own bowls?
  • You may want to purchase your own  but we always have bowls that you can rent.

What types of memberships are available?
  • Adult Bowling Members is $200 per season.
  • Social Membership is $35.00.
  • Student Membership (18 to 25 years) is $75.00.

How frequently can I bowl at L.L.B.C.?
  • We bowl on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, and Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings.

Do I need to join a team to bowl?
  • We do not have set teams for social bowling; just come out and bowl.
  • We do have teams for some of our Club events and for inter-club, provincial and national tournaments.

How long is a typical game?
  • About two hours

How long is your bowling season?
  • About 5 months. We usually bowl from early May to early October.

Do men and women bowl together?
  • Absolutely. Most of our bowling at Leaside Lawn Bowling Club, has women and men bowling together.

How do I join?
  • Please use our contact form to send an e-mail to the club if this pertains to you and someone will get back to you.
